Joseph Karre | Founder and CEO
Joseph Karre is an entrepreneur, record label executive, music video director and songwriter-producer. He is best known as the founder and CEO of ML1 Media and ML1 Records. Since 2013, Karre has been involved in the production and marketing of 36 songs and 6 albums. Joseph and his record label have worked with a number of high-profile artists, producers, engineers and songwriters including 2X Grammy-winner Benny Blanco (25 Billboard #1 hits), 2X Grammy-winner Vaughan Merrick, 2X Grammy-winner Reuben Cohen and many others.
In addition to providing digital marketing services to celebrities, athletes, musicians and Fortune 500 companies, Karre has also served as a political advisor specializing in social media strategy. Karre holds an A.A.S. in Digital Media from South Louisiana Community College. During his time at SLCC, Joseph was a member of Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In addition to graduating at the top of his class, Karre also received the prestigious Chancellor's Academic Excellence Award. Karre is currently studying Digital Media at Harvard Extension School. He served on the Executive Board for Harvard Extension Business Society and Harvard International Case Competition as the Director of Information Technology.
At the age of 15, Karre met musician Chubby Carrier. At that time, Karre's focus was strictly on becoming a music video director and he had no real interest in the music business. Carrier called the following week and shortly thereafter Karre directed "Zydeco Junkie". With over 500,000 views on the music video (which has been viewed in 170 different countries), a Grammy win and major MTV exposure, Zydeco Junkie is arguably the most successful Zydeco / Cajun song in pop culture.
In addition to the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Cajun Or Zydeco Album, Zydeco Junkie also won Best Zydeco Album from OffBeat Magazine, a well known magazine which highlights the region and culture of Louisiana and New Orleans. It is still the only Zydeco or Cajun song to ever be posted on MTV.com and garnered over a quarter of a million views on MTV's website. Zydeco Junkie also is one of the first 3D music videos posted on YouTube.
The music video is considered groundbreaking because of it's creation and use of the "Matrix" effect that bends the foreground/background of the video which creates a computerized camera pan. Weeks later, the effect was used in Kanye West's highly popular music video for "Mercy" which was nominated for two MTV VMAs and garnered over 160 million hits. Zydeco Junkie also is one of the first 3D music videos ever posted on YouTube.
In July 2013, Chubby Carrier and The Bayou Swamp Band's album "Rockin With Roy" debuted at #3 on the Billboard Tastemaker Charts right behind Jay-Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail" and Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories". Carrier is the first Zydeco musician to ever chart on Billboard.
Joseph had been around superstar musicians and bands for years due to the rising demand for his film and photography skills. After seeing how poorly these world-famous artists were treated by major labels, he decided to launch his own fully-independent record label in 2013. Initially, ML1 Records was a niche label for famous songwriters and producers who wrote hits for others but had no platform or backing for their own music. The first deal of this kind came when Joseph signed singer-songwriter / producer Sam Trocki for a national single release of his electronic/pop song "Lights". Trocki spent weeks working on the track in New York and Miami (South Beach Studios) with 2x Grammy-winning producer / songwriter Benny Blanco (25 Billboard #1 hits). Lights was mixed/mastered by 2x Grammy winner Vaughan Merrick (Known for his work with Michael Jackson, Amy Whinehouse, Mary J Blige, Vanessa Williams and David Bowie). Lights was digitally released January 1st 2015. The track debuted at #1 on the Rdio Malaysia Charts and maintained the #1 spot on the Singles chart 5 weeks straight. The song also debuted at #78 on the Rdio United States Charts and broke the Top 40, peaking at #10. Karre and Trocki continue to work together, with Trocki releasing his "Bye Polar" electronic album and the "Kiss Your Chain" rock & roll EP through ML1 Records in 2016. Both records recieved a prominent homepage feature on major music streaming service TIDAL in addition to Trocki being selected as a TIDAL Rising Artist.
Shortly thereafter, Karre signed singer/songwriter Martin Kember to ML1 Records for a national single release of his pop song “U Deserve It Girl”. Martin Kember was most notably known for being a member of the iconic R&B group Color Me Badd. The group had 3 Billboard #1 singles, 17 Billboard Top 20 singles and sold over 12 million records. Their debut album "C.M.B." sold 6 million copies worldwide and was certified 3x Platinum. Kember was also a member of AZ-1 (As-One) which had the Billboard Top 40 hits "Trust In Me" and "With You". The band was signed to Warner Bros and preformed on Soul Train with Don Cornelius. Kember went on to produce 2 tracks for hip-hop legend 2Pac (Thug N You, Thug N Me & Let Em Have It) in addition to Grammy-nominated "So What The Fuss" by Stevie Wonder. in 1999 Kember released his solo debut album on Warner Bros Records titled "One Shade Of Love". U Deserve It Girl was released to rave reviews, praising Kember's lyricism that respected and uplifted women. The song recieved over 100,000 streams within the first few weeks of release in addition to widespread coverage in R&B music blogs. The music video was filmed in Louisiana and directed by Karre.
Karre began working with international recording artist Meaku in 2015, which would turn out to be a major turning point for both of their careers. The first single release Meaku had through ML1 Records was his pop/rap song “On Tonight" featuring Ben J and InkMonstarr. Ben J achieved worldwide fame as a founding member of The New Boyz. The New Boyz were an American hip hop/rap and jerkin' crew duo. They debuted in summer 2009 with their viral hit, "You're a Jerk", which recieved over 400 million plays online. The song peaked at #4 on Billboard Hot Rap Tracks and was the first song to bring the jerkin' style to the national forefront. A second single, "Tie Me Down" featuring Ray J, was also successful and peaked in the Top 30. In May 2011, their second studio album "Too Cool to Care" was released. It includes the Top 40 hits "Backseat", featuring The Cataracs and Dev and "Better with the Lights Off" featuring Chris Brown. The New Boyz have also been featured on Hot Chelle Rae's song "I Like It Like That", which peaked at #28 on the Hot 100. On Tonight got a boost from the music video, directed by Tha Razor & Mr. Terry Taylor and produced by Hemdee Kiwanuka. The "On Tonight" video recieved over 170,000 views on Facebook, over 70,000 combined views from YouTube and Dailymotion, while the song was streamed over 30,000 times and is currently the 2nd most popular song by Meaku on Shazam.
The success didn't stop there, as Meaku released his second single through ML1 Records that would become one of the most popular sexy R&B songs of the decade. Meaku's hit song "All I See Is You" produced by Drew Keyes was released in September 2015 and immediately landed on Spotify's famous "Bedroom Jams" playlist with over 700,000 followers. Choreographers all over the world began making sexy dance routines with the song to post online. Realizing the rapid success of the song, Meaku tapped the director services of Igor Yevdokymov to film the music video for All I See Is You. The official video premiered January 2016 and within weeks was placed on BET Jams, VH1 Soul and MTV U. "All I See Is You" skyrocketed up the Amazon R&B Single Charts; peaking at #37. The track has received over 3.9 million streams on Spotify, over 365,000 views on Facebook, over 280,000 streams on Soundcloud, over 175,000 views on YouTube and continues to gain thousands of streams every day.
Meaku and Karre continued to work together; releasing 5 more successful singles including the major international collaboration “Baby Oh" featuring Eddy Kenzo. An award winning Ugandan musician - Eddy Kenzo is among the most widely beloved entertainers and profoundly influential artists around Africa. Kenzo won the 2015 BET Viewer’s Choice Award for Best International Act. "Baby Oh" has received over 1 million streams online in addition to widespread radio airplay in Africa. The music video premiered on MTV Base in July 2016 and has over 56,000 views on Facebook and 60,000 views on YouTube. Other successful single releases through ML1 Records such as "Study Your Body" and "#TDBTCD (Calm Down)" became fan-favorites and created a solid base for what was to come. In December 2016, Meaku released "Rooted" - his highly anticipated debut EP with 8 songs and a bonus remix track. The groundbreaking record fused afrobeat with pop and R&B, creating a genre Meaku calls "Hybrid Vibes". The self-produced, mixed, and mastered project garnered over 5 million streams in over 32 countries.
Joseph booked, organized and promoted one of the biggest non-arena concerts in Lafayette history when ML1 Media Presents: Metro Station came to The District in March 2017. Metro Station, best known for their double-platinum hit song Shake It, also scored a Billboard #1 on their self-titled debut album. After the release of their single "Shake It," Metro Station hit top-ten in three US charts. Shake It peaked at #3 on Hot Digital Songs, #9 in the Pop 100, #10 in the Billboard Hot 100 and #20 in the Hot Dance Airplay chart. Their self-titled debut album charted at #39 in the Billboard 200, #1 Top Electronic Albums and #2 in the Top Heatseekers. The album had other Billboard-charting hits like Seventeen Forever, Kelsey and Control and sold over 400,000 copies in the United States. Metro Station members include Trace Cyrus (the son of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus and brother of pop star Miley Cyrus) and Mason Musso (older brother of actor Mitchel Musso of Hannah Montana fame). Fans traveled to Lafayette from as far as Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi and Florida to see the first Metro Station show of 2017. The concert turned out to be the final one-off show for Metro Station, as they announced the band was breaking up a few weeks later. The recap video from the concert recieved over 53,000 views on Facebook and an additional 40,000 plays on YouTube.
Now in 2018, Karre has continued to expand ML1 Media with a focus on growing the label portion of his business (ML1 Records) and launching new ventures in the entertainment industry.
